Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the oldest health disciplines in the world, originating in China over 5000 years ago. Acupuncture involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. According to the classical Chinese explanation these points exist along channels of energy, called meridians, which run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. Meridians are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up in others.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture is a proven therapeutic method of treatment that serves to remove the block of energy and therefore activates the body’s innate ability to heal. Acupuncture treatments can therefore help the body’s internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, and energy production activities, and in the circulation of their energy through the meridians. The needles stimulate the body’s energy, or “qi” (chee), to flow and function normally, thus bringing the body back into a state of health.
The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body’s own internal regulating system.

What Can I expect from Acupuncture?
Most individuals will notice immediate results the same day as the treatment. For example, headache acupuncture, the headache is often dissipated drastically or eliminated before the end of the first treatment. It may take several treatments for some individuals to start feeling the positive results of the acupuncture.
Do the Needles Hurt?
People experience acupuncture differently, but most feel no pain or very minimal discomfort as the needles are inserted. There is a typical sensation referred to as da-Chi (“chee”) which is a dull, mildly achy sensation that may last for several seconds or, in some cases, several minutes. Da-Chi is a non-painful and is a desirable sensation for an effective treatment. Some people are energized by treatment, while others feel more relaxed. Only disposable needles are utilized. Treatments are virtually pain free with very little potential for complications.
